The 5 animal freedoms
In animals, good conditions of living which lead to a good animal welfare status are recognized Internationally as the 5 ANIMAL FREEDOMS. When these freedoms are provided to animals, they address or prevent or mitigate on their:
-Thirst and hunger;
-Poor shelter /accommodation and sanitation;
-Injury – pain – disease;
-Mental and physical stress brought about by lack of respect, inadequate compassion –
love, cruelty, abuse and mistreatment of animals.
-Inadequate time for animals to perform their natural behaviors.

Protecting stray and village pets
The Eastern African Region has among the highest numbers of domestic and wild animal resources which also constitute a large biodiversity in conservation. Unfortunately, most of the domestic animals especially working, high confinement and or factory and pets and animals involved in animal welfare disasters / emergencies face high challenges in their lives.

Inadequate care or mistreatment thus pain and suffering in animals result into poor animal health thus low production in areas of their specialties. Such poor animal welfare status leads to collateral negative effects that also affects the health and livelihoods of the largely poor animal dependent communities and the environment. It is like a vicious cycle which needs essential and strategic intervention.
Inadequate care or mistreatment of animals is largely due to lack and or inadequate information leading to lack of respect of animals required by the Internationally Recognized 5 ANIMAL FREEDOMS. Inadequate care or mistreatment of animals is instituted by: cultural; group; individual and or mandated institutions.

Over 90% of all these domestic animals are kept in the rural setting by majority poor communities to enable socio-bonds and socio-economic benefits, however – many a community do not have the ability to maximally care – handle – treat these animals well because the communities themselves require external assistance to survive.

The following areas of high risk where animals are bound to face life threatening or high: abuse; cruelty; mistreatment; pain and suffering have been identified by AWPO requiring Partnership with local and international partners to address and bring sanity to stakeholders and relief to animals involved:

helps improve pet lives including eliminating rabies

has provided logistics for training and care of all types of animals during animal welfare disaster times

helps to provide veterinary drugs and logistics for working animals,

trains and provides actual interventions in animal welfare disaster preparedness and response,
